ES-E 248
Yes Minister: English for Public Administration

Zielgruppe

People with a working knowledge of English (CEFR levels B1/B2 and higher) who need to communicate about their work in international contexts and are interested in exploring the specific terminology of public administration.
NB: This in-person seminar replaces the online seminar by the same name.

Inhalt und Ziele

How does it work in Austria – and how do I say it in English? When you are working internationally, the first question is usually easier to answer than the second, isn’t it?
In this hands-on seminar, you will learn how best to talk about Austrian government and public administration in English, collect key terminology from these areas, and try out practical techniques for handling terminology if the dictionaries let you down.

So let’s talk about

  • levels of government,
  • Austria’s Civil Service: people and institutions,
  • as well as YOUR work in public administration.

Learn how to deal with classic vocabulary challenges …

  • Key concepts of public administration, e.g.: “Bund” & “Länder”, “Beamte” & “Vertragsbedienstete”, “Weisung” & “Erlass”, “Ausgliederung” & “nachgeordnete Dienststelle”
  • Essential phrases, e.g.: bound by instructions, subject to official secrecy, to exercise official authority
  • Tricky terms, e.g.: Does “Sektion” translate as “section”? (Not really.) Can administrative authorities be said to have “jurisdiction”? (They certainly can.) Does the term “the executive” refer to the police? (Definitely not.)

... and get ready to use this terminology in practical settings, e.g. explaining to “outsiders” how we do things in Austria. In addition, the tried-and-tested combination of terminology & communication will give your spoken English a massive boost.
