ES-E 320
Legally Speaking Special: Administrative Law

Zielgruppe

People with a working knowledge of English (CEFR levels B1/B2 and higher) who want to improve their ability to communicate about Austria administrative law in English and explain its key features in international contexts.
NB: This in-person seminar replaces the online seminar by the same name.

Inhalt und Ziele

Talking about administrative law to international partners can be quite a challenge, given the great differences among legal systems. Take the UK, for instance, where offences such as failing to clear up after your dog are considered crimes. So it is hardly surprising that talking about administrative penal law as we know it in Austria can be tricky – to name just one example.
In this compact seminar, you will learn how to handle this and other aspects of administrative law in English and collect the legal vocabulary you need in this context.

So let’s talk about …

  • cases from Austria and abroad,
  • essentials of administrative procedure,
  • public authorities and courts of public law,
  • as well as aspects of administrative law of interest to YOU.

Learn how to deal with “classic” vocabulary challenges …

  • Key concepts of public law, e.g.:
    • “Hoheitsverwaltung” vs. “Privatwirtschaftsverwaltung”
    • decisions from“Mandatsbescheid” to “Straferkenntnis” – and not to forget, “Maßnahmen”
  • Essential phrases, e.g.:
    • to establish the facts, to exercise discretion, to grant vs. to refuse an application
    • to serve a decision ON a party vs. to be served WITH a decision
  • Tricky terms, e.g.:
    • Can “Verwaltung” translate as “executive”? (It certainly can.)
    • When talking about “Revision”, can we just say “revision” in English? (Sorry, we can’t.)
    • Does “Judikatur” translate as “jurisdiction”? (Definitely not.)

… and boost your confidence when discussing such issues in English.
